The older monastery of Saint Dionysios situated 17 kilometers from Litochoro was founded by Saint Dionysios himself in 1542. The monastery is widely known for its significant spiritual, patriotic and social contributions during the struggle for liberation from Turkish domination. From 1821 the monastery was occupied by the Turkish army which burned and plundered it. Many years later in 1943 it was blown up by German troops, because it was considered a hiding place of the Greek resistance forces. Today, pilgrims can visit the old monastery and the tomb of Saint Dionysios which is in the monastery’s recently restored church. Two kilometers to the east of the old monastery is a large cave where visitors can see the area where Saint Dionysios lived for many years as an ascetic. Here, one can also be blessed by drinking miraculous Holy Water which emerges from a spring within the cave. In 1950 due to the destruction of the old monastery its brotherhood relocated to a newer, recently reconstructed monastery complex called the “Metochion” or monastic dependency, which is 3 kilometers from Litochoro. Here, one may visit the monastery’s museum which exhibits many old byzantine icons, beautifully crafted liturgical church items and can also venerate the holy relics of many Orthodox Saints.

The Holy Monastery of Saint Athanasios is situated approximately 3 kilometers west of Kolindros. Unfortunately no official evidence or other documentation exists regarding the date of its foundation. During the German occupation (1941-44) the last remaining cells of the old monastery were completely destroyed. Only its main building survived, and until recently it was in a very bad condition. However, during the years 1980-82, the residents of Kolindros inspired by their faith in God and their desire for a revival of the old monastery decided to build a new church upon the same location of the old demolished monastery. By God’s Grace the revival occurred in 1987, when a sisterhood of nuns came to dwell in the old Monastery. In 1991 reconstruction was completed and the new women’s monastery was officially established. The monastery’s two Feast Days are on May 2nd and January 18th when it celebrates its patron saint Saint Athanasios.
